Statistics show a surge in e-scooter accidents

Whether you like riding an e-scooter for fun or because it is a convenient way to get around, it is crucial to recognize the risks you face near traffic. Even if you prioritize safety and do everything you can to avoid a collision, a driver could hit you if they become tired, distracted or intoxicated. Poor visibility, slick roads, dangerous intersections and traffic congestion also cause many accidents.

If you collide with a vehicle while using an e-scooter, hoverboard or e-bike, you are particularly vulnerable and could become seriously hurt. It is critical to review data on this topic to understand this issue more clearly.

Data on e-scooter injuries

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shared unsettling statistics on e-scooter injuries. Between 2017 and 2021, emergency departments treated an estimated 117,600 injuries due to e-scooter accidents. Furthermore, e-scooter injuries went up considerably in 2021 compared to the previous year. In 2021, emergency departments treated an estimated 42,000 e-scooter injuries, a 66% increase in comparison to 2020 estimates.

Other statistics on e-scooter injuries

From 2017 to 2021, males accounted for 64% of emergency department visits due to injuries from e-scooter accidents. Those between 5 and 14 years old accounted for 18% of visits, while 25% of visits involved those between 15 and 24. More people between the ages of 25 and 34 received treatment for e-scooter injuries than any other age group (39%). A majority of e-scooter accident injuries occurred on streets and highways.

Following an e-scooter accident, it is crucial to stand up for your rights if you suffered an injury due to a driver’s recklessness.
