Why are SUV rollover accidents common?

On Behalf of | Sep 23, 2022 | Personal Injury

An SUV has a top-heavy design that makes it more prone to rollover accidents than other vehicles. Because of this, they usually have warning labels in the vehicle that will mention the rollover risk.

Hot Cars notes that the rollover risk issue is a natural part of the vehicle design that manufacturers cannot remove through technology or other advances. It is impossible to change the center of gravity without major overhauls in the design.

Handling

Because of the issues with the center of gravity, drivers have to be aware of how to handle an SUV differently than a car when driving to avoid the risk of rolling over. It is mainly up to the driver to be sure they understand how to properly turn and maneuver to avoid a swing in the balance of the vehicle that would lead to a rollover.

Avoiding

The biggest concern is a rollover accident is highly dangerous. They often have high fatality rates, which means you probably will not walk away without serious injuries at least. The best chance you have is to avoid this type of accident. You can do this by learning your vehicle and driving carefully. Take turns slowly and be careful when roads are slippery. These are the two situations when you are most at risk. Anytime that the center of gravity may swing and throw the vehicle off balance is a chance for a rollover. Be aware and alert. Make sure you know how your vehicle handles and how it feels when it is off balance.

While you cannot prevent every rollover accident, you can reduce the chances that you have a singular vehicle rollover crash by driving more carefully.
