How do severe brain injuries show?

After getting into a car crash, it is possible for a victim to suffer from a head injury that could lead to a brain injury.

The severity of the injury will differ depending on circumstances unique to each crash, but it is still important to know what to keep an eye out for, especially regarding serious trauma.

Emergence of physical symptoms

Mayo Clinic discusses the impact of trauma on the brain. Severe brain trauma will usually manifest in distinct, immediate and noticeable signs. Compare this to mild brain injuries, which sometimes have such a weak manifestation that the sufferer does not initially notice anything wrong.

In terms of physical appearance, a person with a severe brain injury will likely manifest multiple of the following symptoms. This includes extreme head pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, unconsciousness or a state of coma.

Regarding mobility, they may struggle with balance and coordination, along with fine and general motor skills. Regarding sensory issues, it is common for these victims to struggle with things like distorted vision, ringing in the ears and mixed senses of taste or smell.

Behavioral and emotional red flags

In terms of behavior and emotion, it is not unusual for these victims to begin acting strangely, too. Some will lash out at others, suddenly agitated and angry. Others will show great confusion, fear or stress.

Many forget the events that led up to the accident. Any additional memory loss will usually revert with time, but some damage may persist.

With severe brain damage, every second counts. It is crucial to get medical attention immediately.
