How to respond if an off-leash dog runs toward you

On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2024 | Personal Injury

Encountering an off-leash dog can be an upsetting experience, particularly if the dog appears aggressive or unpredictable. Responding appropriately in these situations can greatly affect the outcome and your overall safety.

Stay calm and avoid eye contact

Your instinct may be to panic or run, but these responses can escalate the dog’s aggression and increase the chances of an attack. Instead, remain composed and avoid direct eye contact, as dogs may perceive this as a challenge. Maintaining a calm demeanor and neutral body language may help de-escalate the situation, reducing the likelihood of an attack.

Stand still and avoid sudden movements

If the dog continues to approach, remain motionless with your arms at your sides and feet firmly planted. Dogs are often less likely to engage if you don’t move. On the other hand, quick or erratic movements may trigger a chase or aggressive behavior. By standing still, you signal that you are not a threat or prey.

Use objects to create a barrier

If you have anything with you, hold it in front of you to create a buffer between yourself and the dog. This not only diverts the dog’s focus but can also offer some protection in case the situation escalates.

Slowly back away while maintaining visibility

Once the dog’s behavior begins to calm, gradually retreat while keeping the dog in your line of sight. Move slowly and deliberately, making sure not to turn your back, as sudden actions could provoke a response and result in a dog bite.

Ensuring your safety

While encountering an off-leash dog can be unsettling, knowing how to respond effectively can help you avoid injury and prevent further escalation. It’s especially important to stay calm so you can make good choices.
